Next Generation Seat Ventilation System for Genesis EV

The shift towards electric vehicles is gaining pace to address carbon neutrality and environmental concerns. New technologies are being developed to cater to the unique features of EVs, such as the low indoor noise at low speeds, which require a low-noise ventilation system. A new dual-blower type system was developed to solve the problem of seat-bottom package caused by battery placement in the vehicle. This system uses two blowers, one for the cushion and one for the back, and reduces RPM to lower high-frequency noise. A new solution was introduced for temperature drop performance in the ventilation system. An integrated controller was also developed to control the seat warmer and ventilation system, with a smart control function added to respond to vehicle speed and ventilation time based on customer usage. As a result, this new ventilation system improves air volume, reduces noise, improves foot space, and reduces the number of parts compared to the previous system.

Automotive companies are trying to enhance the customer’s impression by improving engine sound quality. The target of this sound quality is to create a brand sound that is preferred by their customers as well as quietness of interior noise. Over the past decade there have been many studies in the field of automotive sound quality. These have included the technologies such as tuning of intake orifice and exhaust orifice, tuning of structure-borne, intake feedback devices, active exhaust valves, ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) and ASD (Active Sound Design). The three elements of the sound that affect the feeling of the customer are known as engine order arrangement, frequency balance, and linearity. Here, the most important thing in sound quality development is the order arrangement.

The Effects of Suspension Component Stiffness on the Road Noise: A Sensitivity Study and Optimization

This paper investigates the sensitivity of stiffness of front and rear suspension systems on the structure-borne road noise inside a vehicle cabin. A flexible multi-body dynamics based approach is used to simulate the structural dynamics of suspension systems including rubber bushings, suspension arms, a subframe and a twist beam. This approach can accurately predict the force transfer to the trimmed body at each suspension mounting point up to a frequency range of 0 to 300 Hz, which is validated against a force measurement test using a suspension test rig. Predicted forces at each mounting point are converted to road noise inside the cabin by multiplying it with experimentally obtained noise transfer functions. All of the suspension components are modeled as flexible bodies using Craig-Bampton component mode synthesis method.

Development of Mass Producible ANC System for Broad-Band Road Noise

The mass producible broad-band ANC system for road noise is developed with fully digital control system. For this configuration, installation packages are intensively considered by minimizing size of the controller, simplifying wiring system and implementing virtual microphone techniques. Virtual microphone technique enables error microphone to be installed in remote position of driver’s ear, and therefore, increases installation degree of freedom significantly. To enhance noise control performance with the minimum latency, filter design of FxLMS algorithm is optimized while additional audio compensation techniques are applied to maintain audio performance of amplifier. The present ANC system is equipped to HMC (Hyundai Motor Company) new release of hydrogen driven vehicle, which is introduced in the technology promotion event in Pyeongchang Olympic 2018.

Assessing Panel Noise Contribution of a Car Engine Using Particle Velocity Sensors

In order to apply an effective noise reduction treatment determining the contribution of different engine components to the total sound perceived inside the cabin is important. Although accelerometer or laser based vibration tests are usually performed, the sound contributions are not always captured accurately with such approaches. Microphone based methods are strongly influenced by the many reflections and other sound sources inside the engine bay. Recently, it has been shown that engine radiation can be effectively measured using microphones combined with particle velocity sensors while the engine remains mounted in the car [6]. Similar results were obtained as with a dismounted engine in an anechoic room. This paper focusses on the measurement of the transfer path from the engine to the vehicle interior in order to calculate the sound pressure contribution of individual engine sections at the listener's position.

The Development of Gear Tooth Micro Geometry Analysis Method for the Transmission Gear Noise Robustness

Transmission error has been well known as the main source of excitation about transmission gear whine noise. To minimize transmission error in the gear system, various analysis methods have been studied and applied for long time. Many researchers were focused on gear micro geometry to achieve the low level of transmission error. But, if the gear is misaligned by several factors such as clearance and manufacturing tolerance error, then the gear noise can rapidly and unexpectedly be increased. To overcome this problem, this new analysis method has been developed and introduced. A transmission system simulation model was constructed, which considers various factors of transmission components such as clearance, stiffness and so on. The deformation and vibration characteristics of finite element models were validated by making comparison with frequency response function experiment.

Study on Sound Insulation Performance of Vehicle Dash Reinforcements

Dash panel is the most important path of structure-borne and air-borne interior noise for engine-driven vehicles. Reinforcements, which are added to dash panel, are mainly designed in order to suppress the structure-borne noise contribution from the dash panel. However, the effects of dash reinforcements do not seem clear in the viewpoint of air-borne noise. In this paper, the insulation performance of a dash structure with spot-welded reinforcements is studied through several STL (Sound Transmission Loss) tests and STL simulations. The results of this study could be utilized for increasing the sound insulation performance of vehicle body structure.

Robust Development of Electric Powertrain NVH for Compact Electric SUV

Electric vehicles (EV’s) present new challenges to achieving the required noise, vibration & harshness performance (NVH) compared with conventional vehicles. Specifically, high-frequency noise and unexpected noise phenomenon, previously masked by the internal combustion engine can cause annoyance in an EV. Electric motor (E-motor) whine noise caused by electromagnetic excitation during E-motor operation is caused by torque ripple and radial excitation. Under high speed and high load operating conditions, the overall sound level may be low, however high frequency whine noise can impair the vehicle level NVH performance. An example of a previously masked unexpected noise phenomenon is a droning noise that can be caused by manufacturing quality variation of the spline coupling between the rotor shaft of the E-motor and the input shaft of the reducer. It is dominated by multiple higher orders of the E-motor rotation frequency.

Study on Basic Principles of Operation Noise of Wiper System on Vehicle

The wiper system consists of a motor, linkage, arm, and blade, which provides a clear front view to the driver by removing rain, snow, and foreign matter from the windshield glass. It is a system component that requires a robust design to meet system rigidity, scrubbing performance, and operating noise to any external conditions to provide the driver with a front view. In recent years, however, customer complaints about wiper noise have increased as automobile engine and noise levels have decreased. Based on the analysis of wiper noise, this paper presents quantitative judgment criteria for various wiper noises. In addition, we predict the change of wiper noise to environmental factors through the sound field analysis and propose the solution.

The Analysis of Brake Squeal Noise Related to the Friction Properties of Brake Friction Materials

The friction properties related to squeal noise was analyzed with the development histories and simplified computational method. Firstly, the development histories were investigated especially focusing on the case which the friction materials were modified to improve squeal noise occurrence. Based on the histories, the friction properties of selected friction materials were newly measured using dynamometer. The average friction coefficient levels, torque oscillations, the increment of friction coefficient during full-stop, and etc. were compared with the squeal noise occurrence, and the results showed that increase of friction properties cause production of squeal noise. The result suggested that the size of friction energy was important factors related to triggering the squeal noise. Also, the contact conditions between rotor disc and friction materials were significant factors deciding the noise occurrence.

Target Setting for the Stiffness of Local Mounting Area in the Vehicle Body for NVH and R&H

Performance criterion of local stiffness in BIW(Body in White) for NVH(Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) and R&H (Ride and Handling) are presented in this study. A process to develop the local stiffness of the vehicle body has been established for the performances. For handling performance, not only suspension bush stiffness but local stiffness in BIW structure is important. However, there is no good standard to describe handling performance using BIW local stiffness. In this paper, a new evaluation standard for local stiffness in BIW is developed and verified considering actual vehicle driving condition for handling performance. Also, new evaluation process regarding local stiffness in BIW for vibration transmissibility is presented. The new process is developed considering optimal relation between connecting bush stiffness and BIW local stiffness. It is shown that the interior noise of the vehicle is reduced by applying the evaluation process, which is verified through several cases.

Current developments in the automotive industry such as electrification and consistent lightweight construction increasingly enable the application of active control systems for the further reduction of noise in vehicles. As different stochastic noise sources such as rolling and wind noise as well as noise radiated by the ventilation system are becoming more noticeable and as passive measures for NVH optimization tend to be heavy and construction-space intensive, current research activities focus on active reduction of noise caused by the latter mentioned sources. This paper illustrates the development, implementation and experimental investigation of an active noise control system integrated into the ventilation duct system of a passenger car.

Development of Noise Diagnosis and Prediction Technology for Column-Based Electric Power Steering Systems Using Vehicle Controller Area Network Data

The steering system is a critical component for controlling a vehicle's direction. In the context of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles, where drivers may not always be actively holding the steering wheel, early detection of precursor noise signals is essential to prevent serious accidents resulting from the loss of steering system functionality. It is therefore imperative to develop a device capable of early detection and notification of steering system malfunctions. Therefore, the current study aimed to quantify the noise levels generated within the Column-based Electric Power Steering (C-EPS) system of a D-segment sedan. To this end, we measured the uniaxial acceleration in nine noise-generating areas while simultaneously collecting data from three Controller Area Network (CAN) sources that are directly related to steering operation.

An Improvement of Brake Squeal CAE Model Considering Dynamic Contact Pressure Distribution

In the brake system, unevenly distributed disc-pad contact pressure not only leads to a falling-off in braking feeling due to uneven wear of brake pads, but also a main cause of system instability which leads to squeal noise. For this reason there have been several attempts to measure contact pressure distribution. However, only static pressure distribution has been measured in order to estimate the actual pressure distribution. In this study a new test method is designed to quantitatively measure dynamic contact pressure distribution between disc and pad in vehicle testing. The characteristics of dynamic contact pressure distribution are analyzed for various driving conditions and pad shape. Based on those results, CAE model was updated and found to be better in detecting propensity of brake squeal.

Development of Rumble Noise Analysis Method for Electric Powertrain

In electric-powertrains, noise and vibration can be generated by components such as gears and motors. Often a noise phenomenon known as rumble or droning noise can occur due to low shaft order excitation at the spline. In this study, we identified the excitation source for spline induced rumble noise and developed a novel analysis method. First, a detailed spline model, believed to be the key factor for rumble noise, has been developed and verified by comparison with Finite Element Method(FEM) analysis. In order to identify an excitation source, a typical electric-powertrain assembly model including the developed spline model was constructed and simulated. Results according to changes of key factors including spline pitch errors and shaft alignment errors were analyzed. Spline radial force has been identified as an excitation source of spline induced rumble noise. This was verified through comparison with the forced vibration analysis result and time domain analysis result.

Bushing Stiffness Optimization Method for NVH Improvement Using Blocked Force and Energy-Based Index in Suspension System

Reductions in powertrain noise have led to an increased proportion of road noise, prompting various studies aimed at mitigating it. Road excitation primarily traverses through the vehicle suspension system, necessitating careful optimization of the characteristics of bushings at connection points. However, optimizing at the vehicle assembly stage is both time-consuming and costly. Therefore, it is essential to proceed with optimization at the subsystem level using appropriate objective functions. In this study, the blocked force and energy-based index derived from complex power were used to optimize the NVH performance. Calculating the complex power in each bushing enables computing the power flow, thereby providing a basis for evaluating the NVH performance. Through stiffness injection, the frequency response functions (FRF) of the system can be predicted according to arbitrary changes in the bushing stiffness.

Definition and Application of a Target Cascading Process on a Fully Trimmed Body, from Vehicle Objectives to Component Objectives

Finite element (FE) based simulations for fully trimmed bodies are a key tool in the automotive industry to predict and understand the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) behavior of a complete car. While structural and acoustic transfer functions are nowadays straight-forward to obtain from such models, the comprehensive understanding of the intrinsic behavior of the complete car is more complex to achieve, in particular when it comes to the contribution of each sub-part to the global response. This paper proposes a complete target cascading process, which first assesses which sub-part of the car is the most contributing to the interior noise, then decomposes the total structure-borne acoustic transfer function into several intermediate transfer functions, allowing to better understand the effect of local design changes.

AI-Based Optimization Method of Motor Design Parameters for Enhanced NVH Performance in Electric Vehicles

The high-frequency whining noise produced by motors in modern electric vehicles causes a significant issue, leading to annoyance among passengers. This noise becomes even more noticeable due to the quiet nature of electric vehicles, which lack other noises to mask the high-frequency whining noise. To improve the noise caused by motors, it is essential to optimize various motor design parameters. However, this task requires expert knowledge and a considerable time investment. In this study, we explored the application of artificial intelligence to optimize the NVH performance of motors during the design phase. Firstly, we selected and modeled three benchmark motor types using Motor-CAD. Machine learning models were trained using Design of Experiment methods to simulate batch runs of Motor-CAD inputs and outputs.

Active Vibration Control of Road Noise Path Using Piezoelectric Stack Actuators and Filtered-X LMS Algorithm for Electric Vehicle Applications

This paper presents the novel active vibration control (AVC) system that controls vehicle body vibration to reduce the structural borne road noise. As a result of vehicle noise testing in an electric vehicle, the predominant frequency of vehicle body vibration that worsens interior noise is in the range of 150-250Hz. Such vibration in that frequency range, commonly masked in engine vibrations, are hard to neglect for electric vehicles. The vibration source of that frequency is the resonance of tire cavity mode. Resonator or absorption material has been applied inside the tire for the control of cavity noise as a passive method. They require an increment of weight and cost. Therefore, a novel method is necessary. The vibration amplified by resonance of cavity mode is transferred to the vehicle body throughout the suspension system. To reduce the vibration, AVC system is applied to the suspension mount.

A Study on RANC Technique for Server-based Control Filter Optimization

Broadband active noise control algorithms require high-performance so multi-channel control to ensure high performance, which results in very high computational power and expensive DSP. When the control filter update part need a huge computational power of the algorithm is separated and calculated by the server, it is possible to reduce cost by using a low-cost DSP in a local vehicle, and a performance improvement algorithm requiring a high computational power can be applied to the server. In order to achieve the above goal, this study analyzed the maximum delay time when communication speed is low and studied response measures to ensure data integrity at the receiving location considering situations where communication speed delay and data errors occur.
